Description
WHY MIKUYUNI COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE WAS FOUNDED: Mikuyuni Community Development Initiative was founded to assists orphans and other vulnerable children in Mutito Location to access education in secondary school, polytechnic, college and university. In many developed countries primary and secondary education is free. In Kenya like in some third world countries it is also free, BUT the reality on ground is that the government contributes at most 10% of the total fees required to keep a child in primary and secondary school: the remaining 90% is paid by the parents or guardians and is used to pay for children desks, terminal exams, salaries for security guards, cooks and extra teachers employed by Board of Governors (BOG) because the government does not employ enough teachers; while textbooks, stationery, school uniforms and game kits are supposed to be provided by kids/parents/guardians themselves. These extra costs have locked out many children from the education system in Africa, because children from parents who cannot pay the money stay at home and do not attend classes until the money is paid, which eventually leads to termination of education or poor academic performance. This is essentially why the (MIKUYUNI) initiative was founded: to respond to the needs of children from poor families in Mutito location who are unlikely to remain in school! We believe education is the best weapon with which we can fight human poverty in our village.
HOW YOU CAN EDUCATE A CHILD IN NEED UNDER (MIKUYUNI): There are two types of sponsorships, here known as awards which an interested sponsor/supporter can choose from and educate a child. These are Gold Award (for College & University Education) and Silver Award (for Secondary Education (O-level) and polytechnic training).
GOLD AWARD: The award is meant for children in or joining a college for a diploma or university for a degree course who cannot afford the education costs. The child will have completed secondary school (O-level), passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations and attained a grade of a minimum of B-plain (or >60 point out of 84) examined. The award is € 450/US$ 570 annually per child for four (4) years. The award will be used to pay tuition fees, stationery (writing materials and textbooks), moderate living, medical care and transport costs for the beneficiary.
SILVER AWARD: The award is meant for children in or joining the secondary school or polytechnic (to gain skills in tailoring and dress making, masonry, carpentry etc), but are unable to pay the required fees. These are children who have completed a primary school, passed Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination, and scored more than 300 marks out of 500 examined. The award is €200/US$250annually per child for four (4) years. This award will be used to buy school uniforms, books (writing material and textbooks) and tuition fees for the beneficiary.
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED IN (MIKUYUNI) PROJECT: There are two ways of participating in MIKUYUNI project: sponsoring a child, or patron to assist in fund-raising. Everybody is welcome to sponsor a child in this program by selecting any of the two (Silver & Gold) award categories. Sponsors can be either individual or institutions. Two or more sponsors can pool their resources and sponsor one child. Project executors will evaluate vulnerable families and assign the child/ren to sponsors. Additionally, interested people-and we need many people to take up this role-can also participate by becoming patrons and assist in fund-raising by contacting friends, relatives and institutions. Sponsors and patrons will receive rewards such as photos of sponsored child/ren, contacts of the child/ren, terminal updates/school report forms about the progress of the child in school and an annual project report; which will highlight amount contributed, funding sources (i.e. names of sponsors) and expenditure per child as well as the progress of children. Even though sponsors are free to determine the number of years they want to sponsor a child under the two categories, we believe that it is far much better for a sponsor to be committed to educate a child until they complete their course in polytechnic, college or university.
