CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR)
There is no hiding that life in Africa is tough for many people. Basic needs such as water, food, education and shelter taken for granted by people in developed countries are a luxury to many children and adults in Africa, which is a developing continent. There is also massive destruction of natural habitat fueled by human poverty-which has increased dependence on exploitation of plants and animal resources.
We believe that this situation can be changed by concerted efforts fighting at different fronts. While we do not have all the solutions to address the monumental and depressing challenges which affect people in Africa and particularly in Kenya, we believe that education is an important tool for lifting people from poverty. Educated people are empowered with skills to earn a living and reduce reliance on exploitation of natural resources from environment. Indeed people who developed the write up for this website and the person who constructed this actual website would never have done this, if they had never seen the inside of a classroom.
In Kenya like in some third world countries education is free, BUT the reality on ground is that the government contributes at most 10% of the total fees required to keep a child in primary and secondary school: the remaining 90% is paid by the parents or guardians and is used to pay for children desks, terminal exams, salaries for security guards, cooks and extra teachers employed by Board of Governors (BOG) because the government does not employ enough teachers; while textbooks, stationery, school uniforms and game kits are supposed to be provided by kids/parents/guardians themselves.
These extra costs have locked out many children from the education system in Africa, because children from parents who cannot pay the money stay at home and do not attend classes until the money is paid, which eventually leads to termination of education or poor academic performance. Biodiversity Expeditions Safaris (BES) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) seeks to provide educational opportunity to needy children in Kenya. Five percent (5%) of annual earning of Biodiversity Expeditions Safaris is being used to educate orphaned and other vulnerable child in secondary school.
Visitors and other willing people from abroad and in Kenya can also become long-term sponsors or fundraisers for the children to access education. Benjamin Franklin one of the great American presidents once said ‘if a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest’. At BES we want to invest in education for the needy children in Kenya, because this is a long-term weapon against human poverty and destruction of the environment where our natural heritage of wildlife is conserved.
